Camps – Excursion Programs

Summer Camp

Every summer, ALMA organizes a refreshing, adventurous, and carefree Summer Camp, so that our beloved friends can swim, paint, play, and make new acquaintances! Children (7 years and older) and young people with autism and/or intellectual disabilities can engage in a variety of activities, have fun, become more independent, and, of course, socialize.

Our Summer Camps usually start in mid-June and end at the end of July. The daily schedule runs Monday to Friday from 09:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., staffed by specialized educators, occupational therapists, special-education physical trainers, and psychologists.

At the Summer Camps, children can participate in athletic activities such as basketball, gymnastics, cycling, and swimming (pool). Each activity lasts 45 minutes, after which children rotate to a different activity. Artistic and recreational activities are also offered, including painting, crafts, construction projects, educational games, and board games. Breaks are scheduled for snack preparation and personal hygiene.

Regarding transportation, arrival is the responsibility of parents or guardians at the Agia Skepi Playground, in the space provided by the Association, daily at 9:00 a.m., and departure is at 2:00 p.m.

We look forward to sharing the most fun-filled summers of our lives together!

Excursion Programs

Τhe beneficiaries   with autism and/or intellectual disabilities, like everyone else, have the need and the right to take vacations. They want and need a change of scenery and, of course, to have fun!

At ALMA, our excursion programs are one-day, three-day, and multi-day trips, offering many significant benefits for our children. They enhance autonomy, as participants learn to take care of themselves with less assistance than they would need at home. They develop important daily living skills, such as preparing and eating their meals more independently, taking care of personal hygiene, and maintaining the cleanliness of their space.

Participants are also exposed to stimuli they might not encounter under normal circumstances, which helps develop adaptability and promotes socialization. They interact more with peers as well as with people of other ages, making new friends along the way. At the same time, they socialize within the communities they visit, which has dual benefits: it’s good for our children and young people, and it helps the local communities engage and become more aware of individuals with disabilities.

Finally, excursion programs provide significant support for families, allowing them to rest and attend to their own tasks and responsibilities, or simply do things for themselves—opportunities that would otherwise be very difficult to manage.

One-Day Trips – Sports Saturdays

Once a month (or occasionally on a Sunday by exception), the children and young people of our organization have the opportunity to participate in a full-day recreational program!

Sports Saturdays are one-day trips where our children can have fun, socialize, and collect beautiful and engaging experiences. They also provide a wonderful opportunity to exercise and develop their skills!

The destination and activities vary and rotate: athletic and cultural activities, taking the season into account, create an exciting program from which children and young people can choose what interests them most.

Indicative activities during Sports Saturdays may include:

– Rock climbing

– Bowling

– Visits to museums (e.g., Averoff Museum, Goulandris Museum)

– Hiking (e.g., at the Botanical Garden)

– Trips to the Christmas Factory

– Visits to seasonal bazaars

– Visits to sports and cultural venues

– Participation in sports and cultural events and workshops

And because as we say in Greece “a hungry bear doesn’t dance,” we usually have lunch out, choosing the restaurant based on everyone’s preferences!

The schedule for a typical one-day trip is 09:00 – 16:00, and children and young people are accompanied at all times by ALMA educators. Transportation to the activity locations is provided by bus.

Three-Day Excursions

Every month, we organize one or two three-day excursions from Friday to Sunday, covering accommodation and meals for our children and young people with autism and/or intellectual disabilities.

Most often, we stay in army or air force lodgings, or in a camp, at destinations relatively close to Athens. Children and young people are grouped according to age and functional level and are continuously accompanied by ALMA educators. Our focus is on providing each child with what they need according to their individual requirements. Transportation to the excursion site is provided by bus under the responsibility of our organization.

Our three-day excursions combine sports, recreation, and contact with nature. Participants play basketball or engage in movement-based games/activities, go for walks in nature, play at playgrounds, or enjoy one of our children’s favorite activities, the Treasure Hunt game!

During the day, we also engage in creative and artistic activities or board games. Children paint, make clay sculptures, crafts, and seasonal creations (e.g., Christmas ornaments, Easter baskets, shell crafts).

The fun doesn’t end when evening comes: we organize themed nights, such as movie nights or parties, where we really let loose! Dance, singing, pizza or souvlaki—everyone has a fantastic time!

Because it is very important for us to know that everyone is enjoying themselves, one of our ALMA traditions is to sit together in a circle and talk. We might discuss how our day went, our feelings, share stories, and much more.

Our three-day excursions provide many benefits and help prepare children for participation in longer camp programs, as they develop additional skills for independent daily living.

Multi-Day Excursions

Multi-day excursions children and young people with autism and/or intellectual disabilities usually take place three times a year: at Christmas, Easter, and during the summer. The excursion package includes accommodation and meals, and the destination is chosen according to the season. We make sure that the places we visit are near a hospital or health center.

Children and young people are grouped according to age and functional level and are continuously accompanied by ALMA educators. Our focus is on providing each child with what they need according to their individual requirements.

The destination depends on the season! At Christmas, we prefer locations with ski resorts because we love playing in the snow—especially snowball fights! At Easter, we choose destinations where we can enjoy beautiful walks in colorful nature. In the summer, we go somewhere near the sea, of course, and stay in hotels with pools.

During our excursions, we visit landmarks and places of cultural interest, such as archaeological sites, monasteries, and museums. We also take walks around the city where we stay, visiting retail shops and eateries, enjoying a coffee, orange juice, a snack, or dessert.

During the day, we engage in physical activities such as basketball, movement-based games, playground time, as well as creative and artistic activities or board games. Children paint, make clay sculptures, crafts, and seasonal creations (e.g., Christmas ornaments, Easter baskets, shell crafts).

We also play one of our children’s favorite games, the “Treasure Hunt,” and organize themed evening activities such as movie nights or parties with dancing, singing, and beloved pizza or souvlaki!

Because it is very important for us to ensure everyone is having a good time, one of our ALMA traditions is to sit together in a circle and talk. We may discuss how our day went, share our feelings, tell stories, and more!
