The Program

The Parallel Support Program concerns children of preschool and school age, adolescents, and young adults with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). It may take place in kindergarten, at school, or even at university, depending on the beneficiary’s educational level.

Parallel Support

The program aims to address difficulties in learning, functionality, autonomy, and social interaction. Its purpose is to help the beneficiary cope more effectively with the academic and educational “challenges” they encounter.

The program is staffed by experienced professionals from ALMA’s team. Following an assessment of each child’s needs, the scientific team decides on the selection of the most suitable professional for each case, while the professional providing the support is supervised by the program coordinator.

The professional who provides parallel support accompanies the beneficiary continuously, discreetly, and unobtrusively, helping them to function and socialize effectively.

For example, for a child attending school, Parallel Support may function as follows:

The educator may encourage the child to remain seated during the lesson, help them focus their attention on the teacher, assist in reducing stereotyped behaviors, and act as a link between the child and their classmates – for instance, encouraging other children to play with them in a way that is acceptable to both sides.
In this way, the student can integrate more easily into the peer group, interact more effectively, and enhance their self-confidence.

In the case of children receiving parallel support, there is constant communication with the school units, so that a common methodology is followed and the difficulties faced by the children are addressed consistently by both sides.
When it is determined that the child is able to function independently within the school environment, the parallel support is discontinued.

Children enrolled in the Day Centre for Children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders may also participate in therapeutic and educational programs, such as Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Special Education Programs, and Psychomotor Therapy.
The composition of the educational and therapeutic plan depends on the individual needs of each child.
